From the wild hills of Marin to the high-tech suburbia of the Silicon Valley, the nine-county Bay Area has a population of over six million people and is the fourth largest metropolitan region in the country. Sadly, so many tourists do San Francisco, then rush to Hollywood or east to Yosemite National Park without noticing the many treasures that lie at San Francisco’s feet. To the south, visitors find the museums of San Jose, beautiful beaches, numerous wineries, and excursions on antique trains through redwood forests. Across the bay, Oakland attracts nature lovers to the gardens and wildlife refuge around Lake Merrit.
